Iris rejected
Yesterday saw the Belfast Gay Pride Parade 2008 in the city centre. Loads of gorgeous transvestites and exuberant gay couples stunning the shoppers and tourists. Participants again attacked Northern Ireland Assembly member Iris Robinson for saying homosexuality was an abomination and that therapy could turn gays into healthy heterosexuals. She is still unrepentant and refuses to resign.

Iris was invited to attend by the parade organisers. But declined, to accept the invitation may hurt her standing I guess, however this also meant that she was unable to protest the parade.

Iris out!
ReplyDeletedj - I'm not surprised she didn't turn up. She would have been lynched!
ReplyDeletemuddy - That's what half the population are saying, but she refuses to leave. After all, she gets her orders from a Higher Authority.
Like I said in my blog, accepting the invitation might have hurt Iris Robinson's standing. But she would have been perfectly safe, I mean gays might be shallow, vain, egotistical and generally flawed, like everyone I guess. But it's not like we would stoned her or something, we're far more progressive than that.
ReplyDeletedj - Well, maybe not lynched but she would have had a pretty rough reception. There's a lot of anger and hurt out there. I just wonder what on earth Peter makes of his wife's increasingly eccentric remarks. As First Minister, surely he's acutely embarrassed?
ReplyDeleteWell in a way it's to be expected, the DUP are mostly Free Presbyterians. Fundamentalist Christians, there basic anti anyone isn't white with the same beliefs as them. It's understandable in a perverse way that Iris made these comments, however stupid and base they may have been.
ReplyDeleteBut to make these comments publicly and remain unrepentant. That's problem, of course the DUP is anti-gay, they're anti everyone as I already stated. But they don't run politically on an active anti-gay platform.
These statements may be inkeeping with the party beliefs. But they are not inkeeping with the party's policies. Even though it is difficult to be sure, if the beliefs and policies are different at all.
dj - Apparently Iris said the government's function is to carry out God's law - a bit like Muslims wanting Sharia law to take precedence. In which case she's trying to completely subvert the process of government. For that reason alone, she should resign or be sacked.
ReplyDeleteAh yes that is a problem, please ignore comments I made on mudflapgypsy's blog. I bothered to do some research and am now familiar with sharia law, I realise I should have done the research before commenting, but it was 2:00 in the morning I wasn't thinking.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the generally consensus in most countries is that God should stay out of government. Even here in here, in this backwards little province, that is true. So we should be safe for a little while.
I agree, she should be sacked. She can't resign, as you say, "She gets her orders from a Higher Authority." It amazes me that we even have to have this discussion. Other politicans have been force to withdraw from public life, after lesser infractions, why is Iris Robinson any different.
Also, it amazes me how often fundamentalist christians quote the old testament. When the teachings of are derived from the new testament.
ReplyDeleteIt's judeaism that follows the teachings of the old testament, yet jews seem to be more progressive than christians. And less likely to force their beliefs on others.
teachings of christianity. that should be in the 1st paragraph.
ReplyDeletedj - Indeed, it's astonishing what NI politicians are allowed to get away without being rudely expelled from government, on the flimsy excuse that they are just "voicing a personal opinion". Except that according to Iris it's not personal opinion, it's the irrefutable word of God.
