We aren’t supposed to talk about body hair. Either you have
it or you haven’t and that’s that. You might have problems with it but nobody
wants to know about that.
Fair enough for blokes because we’re allowed to have as much
body hair as we want, including beards and moustaches. Some men would even say
the hairier the better. But other men like to remove their body hair and that’s
fine as well.
Very different for women, who’re expected to have no body
hair whatever and keep themselves permanently smooth and hairless. So they have
to spend time waxing and shaving and plucking and electrolysing until they’re
as smooth as a baby’s bottom.
But I’ve known several women who complained frequently that
they had prolific body hair and it drove them mad trying to get rid of it all.
They would wear clothes that completely covered their body and hid the
offending hair.
Why can’t we just decide for ourselves what to do with our body
hair? Either leave it as it is or remove it all, as we wish?
Personally I have very little body hair so it doesn’t bother
me. But if I was one of those heavily hirsute males I’d definitely want to get
rid of it all. It might be hugely laborious but the truth is I would want to be
as smooth as a baby’s bottom.

Smooth and hairless

It's definitely up to the individual, though I would add that I think spouses should have a say.
ReplyDeleteBijoux: I agree, it's up to the individual. I think spouses should respect the other's preferences.
DeleteMenopause solved the problem for me. All gone, including my thick head hair. Now it's thin head hair. I'm of Mediterranean decent so I wasn't hairy but I wasn't smooth as a baby's but either!
ReplyDeleteSandra: So menopause was the breakthrough. I didn't know that was one possible result of menopause! It must have been a relief....
DeleteYa, I used to chuckle at the weird coincidence that no male fashion models had any chest hair.
ReplyDeleteWhen my leg hair all went away in my twenties (but not chest hair) I daydreamed that I could fool people, if I pulled up my jeans leg, into thinking I was a drag queen or something, so I could be mysterious.
My friend was a massage therapist. She was amused at how she could count a specific number of seconds until someone said, "I haven't shaved my legs." Not because it affected the massage, it didn't, but. because of a body fashion thingy. She was sympathetic.
Sean: I'm glad I never find myself in some social gathering wondering if I've shaved my legs or not.
DeleteThank god I still have my eyelashes, that's all I'm saying, but Sandra is correct re menopause! Though the hair on my head is still good - for the time being!

Ms Scarlet: I wonder if there's a male equivalent of the menopause. My body hair seems to be getting less and less.
DeleteI agree with other women about menopause. My hair on my head has thinned and the other hair has stopped growing.
ReplyDeleteMary: Well, it seems the post-menopausal loss of body hair is pretty common. So how come I've never read about it?
