Which started me looking into the history of birthday cakes and how they came about.
Cakes have been a part of birthday celebrations in Western Europe from at least the mid 19th century. They started off very simple but became increasingly elaborate with multiple layers, icing and decorations. For a while the cakes were generally only available to the very wealthy. They became affordable to the lower classes as the Industrial Revolution led to mass production of ingredients.
So I'm 79 this year. Next year is the big milestone as I become an octogenarian. Will I still be fairly fit and healthy into my eighties or will I be a crumbling wreck? Who knows?
If I'd been born earlier, before all the recent medical advances, I might not have made it to 79. I may well have died in my sixties. I wonder what the eighties have in store?

Happy birthday nick.
ReplyDeleteThe eighties .... hmm, maybe you'll become a vegan, or turn into a hippie smoking a joint, or start peforming some r&b hip hop beats? 😊
Liam: I won't be turning vegan, I like cheese too much. I did try cannabis a couple of times but it didn't do anything for me. I just intend to grow old disgracefully.
DeleteYou are four months older than I am so I have many of the same thoughts. We didn't have big celebrations when I was a kid but the birthday child got to pick the dinner menu. I don't even like today what was my favorite back then. I guess that's one thing that changes as we age.

Linda: The birthday child chose the dinner menu, that's a nice idea. In my case it would be the veggie cliché, nut roast.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Nick! No birthday cake? Do you not like it or is a whole cake just too much for two people?
ReplyDeleteWishing you great health in the coming years!
Bijoux: Just not very keen on it. Not sure why.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I love cake. lol I hope you have many more healthy, happy birthdays.
ReplyDeleteMary: Perhaps I should try a bit of birthday cake, just for a change....
DeleteI'm not keen on milestone birthdays as they do set you thinking. Keep active, Nick, I think that's one of the most important things to do. A daily walk at least. My dog walking friend is almost 90. Look after your feet!
ReplyDeleteSx
Ms Scarlet: I do at least a half-hour walk most days, so my feet should be in good shape.
DeleteNick,
Deletewe are both oldies now 84 for Saïd and 81 for me. We manage our daily life as best as we can . No birthdays without birthday cakes. Saïd loves to create birthday cakes and family , friends and neighbours will always get one.
Hannah
Hannah: I'm beginning to think I should get a birthday cake....
DeleteHappy early 🎂 birthday, Nick, and you should celebrate your last year in the 70s. Perhaps, a dessert other than cake would be enjoyed. I prefer ice cream with my cake. When you do become an octogenarian next year, hope you will share that celebration 🎉
ReplyDeleteBeatrice: Thanks. I also prefer cake with ice cream (I do eat cake sometimes). I shall certainly share my 80th, if I'm still around by then.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Nick.
ReplyDeleteLinda: Thanks.
DeleteHappy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Paula.
DeleteHi Nick,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I missed your birthday! I do agree that you need to celebrate the last year in the 70s and I hope you had cheese. Cheesecake, even?
Happy late Birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉
I hope you had a good birthday! Thanks for the info about birthday cakes. That was interesting.
